스즈키 도시후미 日 세븐일레븐 전 회장 별세

The business world mourns the loss of Toshifumi Suzuki, the visionary leader who transformed convenience retail across the globe. He was 93 years old.

According to Japanese media reports, the former executive passed away from heart failure earlier this month.

Early Career and Vision
After completing his studies in economics at Chuo University, Suzuki joined the retail company Ito-Yokado back in the early 1960s. He accepted an invitation from the company’s founder, Masatoshi Ito, which would set the stage for retail history.

His breakthrough came when he encountered the American convenience store concept and recognized its potential. He brought the 7-Eleven brand to Japan and adapted it to fit Japanese consumer culture. This innovation earned him the legendary title of “the god of convenience stores.”

Leadership Legacy
In late 1978, Suzuki took the helm as president and representative director of 7-Eleven Japan. Under his leadership, the chain expanded dramatically both domestically and internationally.

He ascended to the position of group chairman in 2005, where he continued shaping retail strategy until stepping down in 2016. His influence fundamentally changed how people around the world think about convenient shopping and helped spread the Japanese-style convenience store model globally.
