A future cabinet member in Hungary has captured widespread attention by breaking into spontaneous dance moves during a major political ceremony, celebrating his country’s first change in government leadership in over a decade and a half.
The new Prime Minister’s swearing-in ceremony took place recently, marking a historic shift in the nation’s political landscape. Among those present was Zolt Hegedus, age 56, who has been nominated to lead the health ministry in the incoming administration.
Hegedus, whose professional background is in orthopedic medicine, couldn’t contain his excitement during the inauguration event. Standing before a massive crowd of tens of thousands, he performed improvised dance routines that included air guitar performances and playful movements. His infectious energy drew other officials onto the stage, and they joined him in the celebratory dancing.
This wasn’t his first public dance performance—he had similarly celebrated an electoral victory with spontaneous moves just weeks earlier.
Speaking to journalists afterward, Hegedus explained that many people had asked him beforehand whether he would dance at the ceremony. “When the music started playing, I could feel how much everyone had been anticipating this moment,” he shared. He didn’t want to let the crowd down.
He went on to encourage people to step away from their electronic devices and embrace moments of togetherness through dance. He referenced táncház—traditional community dance halls that were once widespread throughout the country—suggesting it might be time for their revival.
The nation has a rich tradition of communal dancing in public squares and streets, a cultural practice that received recognition from UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list more than a decade ago.
