K-팝 시장 판 흔들까…‘이수만의 귀환’에 가요계 시선 집중

The Return of a K-pop Pioneer

While BTS prepares for their highly anticipated comeback performance in Seoul after nearly four years, another significant shift is happening in the Korean pop music scene. The founding architect of SM Entertainment is set to re-enter the domestic market, marking a pivotal moment for the industry.

Freedom After Three Years

The non-compete clause that restricted domestic activities expires at the end of this month. This agreement originated when the entertainment mogul sold his SM Entertainment shares to HYBE in early 2023. The restriction was essentially a protective measure given his enormous influence in the K-pop world.

A New Boy Group in Development

Preparations are already underway for a fresh boy band, potentially debuting within the first half of this year. This would be the first such launch in a full decade—since introducing NCT. Over the years, the producer built an impressive lineage starting with H.O.T., then Shinhwa, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee, EXO, and NCT. Each generation brought unique concepts, from superpowers in EXO to “Culture Technology” with NCT.

Given that ten years have passed, the upcoming group will likely target newer generations with fresh conceptual frameworks. The target demographic appears to be Gen Z and Generation Alpha, moving beyond Millennials.

Testing Ground in Singapore

During the restricted period, attention turned international. A2O Entertainment launched in Singapore in 2024, introducing girl group A2OMAY with “Zalpha-Pop” as their core identity. Industry observers view this as a warm-up phase, with the new boy group expected to showcase the full vision of this evolved creative direction.

Strained Relationships

The departure from SM Entertainment was contentious. Former co-CEOs and longtime associates publicly raised allegations through personal YouTube channels, escalating tensions significantly. One response at the time expressed deep disappointment, noting long personal histories and family connections that made the conflict particularly painful.

The rift remains evident—the founder declined an official invitation to SM Entertainment’s 30th anniversary celebration. With SM Entertainment also preparing their own new boy group through a reality competition program, a direct rivalry between two groups sharing SM’s DNA seems inevitable.

Gathering Forces

Former SM producers and artists who left the company may reunite around this central figure. At a recent American awards ceremony, attendees included Girls’ Generation member Sunny, producer Yoo Young-jin, and A2OMAY members. Speculation even suggests that singer BoA might rejoin forces after her SM departure.

Chinese Market Strategy

Despite ongoing restrictions on Korean entertainment in China, A2OMAY—comprised of Chinese members—has achieved remarkable success. The group secured four major awards including Best New Artist at multiple ceremonies. If this approach establishes a foothold in the Chinese market, it could represent another transformative moment for K-pop, delivered through a distinctly personal strategy.

The coming months will reveal whether this return reshapes the competitive landscape or creates entirely new pathways in the global pop music industry.
