A Rising Star Emerges on the Fairway
Korean golf has found a new talent to watch. At just 16 years old, high school freshman Son Je-yi stunned the professional circuit by securing a tie for fifth place at a major tour event—only his second time competing against the pros.
The young athlete posted an impressive 15-under-par total, propelled by a stellar third-round performance that included an eagle and a 7-under 65. He followed that up by trimming three more strokes in the final round, proving his consistency under pressure.
Learning from the Best
During his third round, Son played alongside a senior pro who helped ease his nerves. “He made me feel comfortable out there,” Son recalled. “My shot-making felt natural, and the ball landed exactly where I visualized it.”
In the final round, he shared the course with a past tour champion known for aggressive play. The experience proved educational. “I love exciting golf,” Son explained. “Watching that attacking style taught me so much about star quality and courage.”
Thriving Under the Spotlight
While many players feel pressure from watching crowds, Son found it energizing. Amateur tournaments don’t draw spectators, so he’d only imagined playing before galleries. “Having real people watching made it more fun,” he said. “Getting my first autograph request was amazing—the support gives me strength.”
He also faced a new challenge: professional rules prohibit the rangefinders he uses in amateur play, requiring manual yardage books instead. Making things harder, his caddy was his cousin—a medical trainer, not a golf specialist. “Learning to read the yardage book was unfamiliar but interesting,” Son noted. “Trusting those numbers paid off.”
A Prodigy’s Journey
Son’s talent emerged early. During elementary school, he captured an astounding 37 tournament victories. By middle school, he swept three major national championships in succession, earning a spot on the national team. Now in high school, his momentum continues—he recently claimed his seventh career amateur title and is regarded as one of the country’s hottest prospects.
His key strengths? Powerful driving with minimal wayward shots, high fairway accuracy, precise approach play, and an unusually calm mindset that thrives on pressure and excitement.
Eyes on Bigger Prizes
Son’s ambitions stretch far beyond domestic success. This year, he’s targeting five wins in national golf association events, particularly prestigious championships. Next month, he’ll compete in the Korean Open as an amateur national team member, aiming for a top-ten finish.
But his ultimate dream burns brightest: reaching the PGA Tour and claiming victory at the Masters Tournament. “During Masters week, I wake up automatically before dawn,” he confessed with a smile. “I watch every broadcast and imagine myself doing the winner’s ceremony on that stage someday.”
With talent, fearlessness, and big dreams, this teenage sensation is writing the opening chapters of what could be a legendary career.
