The delegation included Mehdi Taj, who leads Iran’s football association, along with Secretary General Hedayat Mombini and Deputy Secretary General Hamed Momeni. They had traveled to participate in the global football congress scheduled ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament.
Revolutionary Guard Connection Cited
Canadian authorities explained their decision by pointing to past military service connections with Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This organization faces sanctions from both Canada and the United States.
Iran’s media outlets reported that immigration officials behaved inappropriately during processing and made disrespectful comments about Iran’s premier military institution. A Canadian government statement noted that while they don’t discuss individual entry refusals, “individuals associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps cannot enter Canada.”
Gary Anandasangaree, Canada’s Public Safety Minister, reinforced this position by stating that people linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard are not welcome in the country.
FIFA Responds with Regret
Following the incident, FIFA officials quickly reached out to the Iranian delegation to express deep regret over what had transpired. The international football body announced plans to organize a special meeting between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and high-ranking members of Iran’s football leadership at FIFA headquarters.
