음악성 인정받은 걸그룹…이프아이 “비주얼·예능감도 자신 있어요”[인터뷰]

“We’re a girl group that excels in both musical artistry and visual presentation.” This confident statement came from the five-member ensemble I.FI during a recent media conversation, when asked about what sets them apart in the competitive landscape.

The quintet—comprising Miyu, Rahee, Won Hwayeon, Kasia, and Taerin—recently made their return with their third mini-album titled As if. This release marks their first new material following a nine-month pause, coming after their second mini-album sweet tang.

Kasia explained the concept: “We explored imaginative scenarios built around the theme of ‘what if.’ During our time away, every member worked diligently on improving vocal techniques and rap delivery, so listeners will notice our artistic growth.”

The title number Hazy blends energetic Drum & Bass rhythms with soothing easy-listening elements, creating a unique pop sound. The lyrics tell a story about hesitation gradually transforming into blossoming romance.

The members described their new lead single as showcasing I.FI’s signature sophisticated yet dreamlike identity. Rahee and Won Hwayeon noted: “We intentionally avoided making the tone too bright. Drawing from our experience with NERDY, we incorporated breathy vocals to emphasize our distinctive style.”

Taerin added: “The beat hits hard while the vocals remain sweet. The choreography features lots of footwork giving it a hip-hop vibe. It’s genuinely multifaceted.”

Critical Recognition

Since their debut roughly a year ago, I.FI has earned praise from music critics both domestically and internationally. Their previous title tracks NERDY and r u ok? received notable acknowledgment—NERDY appeared on a prominent Korean music webzine’s annual singles list, while r u ok? was included in a British music magazine’s compilation of top K-pop releases.

Rahee expressed satisfaction: “Receiving positive reviews from both local and international outlets felt rewarding and motivating.”

Kasia emphasized their dedication: “I.FI is genuinely passionate about music. Anyone who listens to our full albums will discover that not just the title tracks, but all our songs demonstrate high quality.” Miyu chimed in: “You’ll definitely find at least one track that resonates with you.”

Won Hwayeon shared: “Music journalists often tell us they enjoy our songs. Being recognized as a group with strong musical output so quickly after debut feels wonderful.”

Taerin smiled while recounting: “Seeing comments calling us ‘a team with hidden gems’ or hearing our music playing in stylish cafes makes me feel proud that we’re gaining recognition.”

Looking Ahead

Kasia mentioned with a modest smile: “Early on, people called us an ‘all-visual-center’ team. We’ve prepared songs and choreography that suit that description well, and we hope many people will show interest.” She added that Hazy fits perfectly with spring and aims to make the song synonymous with the season.

The group has set their sights on achieving top rankings on music shows and streaming charts. Additionally, the members highlighted their entertainment skills as a secret weapon, expressing interest in appearing on popular variety programs including workplace reality shows, mystery-solving formats, and action game shows.
