Early Summer Heat Strikes China’s Capital
Over the recent weekend, the capital experienced unseasonably warm conditions as daytime temperatures climbed above 30°C. Residents were spotted wearing short sleeves and shorts, signaling that summer-like weather had arrived earlier than usual.
Temperature Records
According to local meteorological authorities, the peak temperature reached 31°C on the previous day. Flat terrain areas saw highs of 33°C, while mountainous regions recorded temperatures between 29°C and 32°C. This marked the first time this season that temperatures exceeded the 30-degree threshold.
What’s Causing This Heat Wave?
Weather forecasts indicate that clear, hot conditions have persisted in northern regions from the 10th through the 13th of this month. The rapid warming throughout northern areas has been attributed to intense solar radiation following early May.
A chief meteorological forecaster explained that this heat wave is fundamentally driven by strong sunshine. Northwestern air currents at high altitudes have caused widespread surface heating, with ground characteristics accelerating the temperature rise. As upper-level warming patterns shift eastward, the clear and hot weather is also spreading from west to east.
Another contributing factor involves hot air masses rising from western plateau regions, then descending into eastern plains. Since plains sit at lower elevations with denser air compared to plateaus, the hot air undergoes compression, causing temperatures to climb even higher.
Is This Unusual?
Forecasters note that while temperatures may surpass 35°C in some areas, these readings are not historically extreme for this time of year. For instance, certain western regions have historically recorded mid-May temperatures as high as 44°C, with current readings around 40-41°C on May 10-11.
This heat pattern is typical of northern “dry heat” weather, characterized by cooler conditions in shaded areas and comfortable evenings once the sun sets.
Safety Recommendations
Meteorological experts advise the public to minimize outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat. Those required to work outside for extended periods during daytime hours should take appropriate protective measures to avoid heat-related health issues.
