Director Park Hoon-jung’s newest film ‘Sad Tropics’ has earned the Silver Raven Award at the 44th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
According to distributors Mindmark and international sales company Finecut, ‘Sad Tropics’ stood as the sole Korean entry among films invited to the international competition category. After intense competition, the film secured the Silver Raven Award, which represents a special jury prize.
‘Sad Tropics’ is an action noir thriller centered on a group of young assassins belonging to a killer organization called ‘Sad Tropics,’ raised by ‘Sabu,’ who rules as the supreme power in the tropical rainforest. The story unfolds as these children begin suspecting each other following an incident that shakes their very existence, leading them down a path of bloody vengeance.
The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, which took place from April 3rd to 18th, stands as Belgium’s premier film festival. It ranks among the world’s top three fantastic film festivals, alongside the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival and Fantasporto International Film Festival.
This award is viewed as another confirmation of Korean genre cinema’s competitive strength on the global stage. The Silver Raven Award, being the special jury prize in the international competition section, holds added significance as recognition of Director Park Hoon-jung’s distinctively powerful direction and genre mastery.
Previously, ‘Sad Tropics’ received an invitation to the Orbita section at the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, and now with this Brussels win, the film continues drawing attention from global genre film enthusiasts.
The Brussels jury panel praised the work highly, stating: “The film impresses with its expansive world-building, bold storytelling approach, original characters, and exceptionally well-crafted large-scale action sequences.”
‘Sad Tropics’ is currently in final post-production stages and awaits its domestic release.
