Major Japanese Companies Embracing AI Prepare for Workforce Restructuring

A recent survey conducted by Tokyo Shoko Research has revealed striking trends in how Japanese corporations are responding to artificial intelligence integration. The study examined 6,327 companies across Japan and found significant plans for workforce changes in the coming years.

Among the 2,088 firms actively implementing AI technologies, nearly half indicated they are considering major employment adjustments within the next five years. Specifically, 29% mentioned potential job reassignments, while 16% are contemplating workforce reductions.

The impact appears even more pronounced at larger corporations, where 58% anticipate such changes. This suggests that office workers—particularly those in well-compensated white-collar positions—may face considerable disruption as automation advances.

Approximately 4% of surveyed companies indicated they might introduce early retirement programs for office staff within this timeframe.

Overall, 34% of all companies reported actively pursuing AI adoption, a figure that jumps to 59% among large enterprises. These numbers represent a sharp increase of over 10 percentage points compared to a similar survey conducted eight months earlier.

Industry analysts predict that “the employment effects of AI will be especially visible among white-collar workers at major corporations.”
