Jjanggu’ Returns After 17 Years — A Story of Youth, Dreams, and Harsh Reality

The character Jjanggu from the film ‘Wind’ has returned to the big screen. The original independent movie premiered seventeen years ago and left such a lasting impact that male audiences still refer to it as an “unofficial ten-million-ticket blockbuster.” Now, the beloved character comes back in a new film simply titled ‘Jjanggu’, telling a fresh story about youth and dreams.

The narrative follows Jjanggu (played by Jung Woo), who moves to Seoul hoping to become an actor. His reality is harsh—he fails audition after audition and struggles financially to the point where he cannot even pay his electricity bills. During a visit to his hometown to see friends, he encounters Min-hee (Jung Su-jung), who seems like his dream woman. However, neither his acting ambitions nor his romantic pursuits go according to plan.

Jung Woo takes on triple duties in this project: he co-wrote the screenplay, co-directed, and reprised his role as Jjanggu. He delivers his performance in a thick Busan dialect, carrying the film with both charm and authenticity. Despite being a seasoned actor in real life, he deliberately showcases clumsy, awkward acting within the story, creating moments of humor. Jung Woo expressed his intention to “offer comfort and connection to young people” through this deeply personal character.

While the film attempts to deliver a universal message through Jjanggu’s individual journey, the narrative and character development lack conviction. Even accounting for the period setting, certain character portrayals—particularly Min-hee and the hometown friend Kkangnaeng-i—feel unconvincing. Min-hee is supposedly a representation of male fantasy and the harsh barriers of reality, but this characterization fails to resonate meaningfully. As a result, the film’s attempt to console struggling youth doesn’t quite achieve its intended emotional impact.
